In the Texas lowlands, he crosses with Johanna (Helena Zengel), a ten-year-old boy who was adopted by the Kiowa people six years earlier and raised as his wife. Johanna, an enemy of the world she has never met, turns against her will for her aunt and uncle. Kidd agrees to have a child where the law says it is his. As they tirelessly travel hundreds of miles into the wild, the couple will face daunting challenges posed by human and natural forces in search of a place to call home.
